Hasma with Lotus Seeds and Red Dates

Hasma also known as Snow Frog Jelly, usually used to cook dessert. Double boiled or cooked with red dates and dried longan, is a refreshing and nourishing dessert. Perfect for our reunion dinner to cleanse the palate after a very heavy dinner. Serve it chill or warm are equally nice.

Prosperity Pot - An auspicious dish for Chinese New Year. This was my first attempt to cook this for our reunion dinner. Lots of step in the preparation but is worth all the efforts as it turn out quite well. Definitely going to cook this again.

A Prosperity Pot filled with premium ingredients - Sea cucumber, dried scallop, dried oyster, dried mushroom, black moss and chicken.

On the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year, every family would gather together to have a wonderful meal at home or in restaurants. This is known as the reunion dinner and is the most important family meal for the Chinese. This year we had steamboat at home for our reunion dinner.

The preparation of the dinner started early in the morning. While aunt was busying in the kitchen, I was decorating the house for CNY. All ready to welcome the Year of Dragon by noon, then I joined my aunt in the dinner preparation.

Pig Maw Soup 猪肚汤

A traditional soup that my family love to cook during Chinese New Year! To make a wholesome pot of soup, usually lots of good stuff are added though the star is pig maw (pig stomach). I enjoy this soup very much, especially the peppery broth is so tasty that instantly warm you up the first mouthful. This symbolise warm and love as the family gather together for reunion dinner!

This food centre is rather small in size as compared to the usual one so there are not many choices but there are 4 stalls that make me and my colleagues go back again and again. 4 of our favourites are the Salted duck rice, Fish ball noodles, Satay beehoon and Kway chap.

Happy 2012 to all Aspiring Bakers family members and members-to-be! I'm the host for this month theme - Auspicious Dishes for CNY (January 2012). I feel so honor to be the first host for 2012 and many thanks to Small Small Baker for giving me this opportunity to be the host.

For once Aspiring Bakers is doing a cooking instead of baking theme! As we had done a CNY cookies theme before back in February 2011 so after much discussion with SSB, we decided to have a cooking theme instead. It can be any kind of dishes (vegetables, noodles, rice, meat & seafood) or desserts (eg. Agar agar, Nian gao, Tang sui etcs) that are prepared for reunion dinner or CNY 2012. Please note that steamboat is not accepted, we decided to exclude it because it's difficult to write up a recipe. The followings are the event's details:

How to join?

Step 1 :

Cook/Prepare a dish/dessert for Reunion Dinner or during CNY 2012 in the month of January 2012. Any dish/dessert except steamboat and CNY cookies/cakes are not accepted.

Step 2 :

Post it on your blog between 01 January 2012 and 31 January 2012. (Extended to 6th Feb 2012) Your post must include the recipe or link to the original recipe. If you are using a recipe from a book, please include the title of the book too.

*Any entries that are posted outside the date range will not be accepted.

*Any entries that do not include a recipe or link to the original recipe will not be accepted too.

Step 3 :

Last post of the Year 2011! My Christmas Celebration 2011 began with shopping for X'mas presents and baking for family, colleagues & friends! This year didn't bake much, just baked some Val's chocolate macadamia cookies & fruit cakes.

Lots of time spend baking the cookies and packed them up but it's worth all the effort as I received fabulous feedbacks that they enjoyed my bakes...!

Gardenia Wraps were launched few months ago, come in original and wholemeal. The wraps provide quick and nutritious meal solutions, a great alternative to bread. It can be used as a pizza base too. Available in most local leading supermarkets. Have any of you tried before?

I tried and loving it ever since... Each pack contains five pieces of soft wraps in a resealable bags. Convenient and handy.

Enjoy a pipping hot and spicy Korean style seafood noodles hotpot in the comfort of your home in this cooling weather was really enjoyable. I got the idea for this dish from my recent Korea trip where they always served this noodles in Korean Chinese restaurant. Quite simple and fuss free to whip up.

Since is a hotpot, we can add anything we like. Rich and spicy... very shiok!

The last time I blogged about this chicken pie was 2 years ago. Two years later the pie is still as good and as impressive. They were from a neighbourhood bakery cafe and they also have very good curry puff and apple pie.

I wanted pasta and my family wanted some pizza so we ended up at Lenas where they have everything we crave for ... Lenas offer lots of choices on the menu and we decided to go for the value for money family feast B for 4 pax at $68.00++. Overall the food is not bad, check out my last visit too.

We started off with Garlic bread which was not included in the set. This was good! Crispy french bread with generously spread with garlic butter. Yum!

Browsing through numerous book for cupcakes recipes and this particular one caught my attention with it's beautiful presentation. I have never tried any recipe from this book - The Golden Book of Chocolate where I got it from a bookfair years ago. I made some slight modification and glad that it still turned out well.

Moist, soft, chocolaty and nutty cupcakes frosted generously with nutella are so irresistable!

Visited this steamboat joint in July 2011 with family to celebrate my Uncle's birthday. An ala carte buffet steamboat restaurant located at Joo Chiat Road. Quite value for money at:

Mon to Thu - $16.80++/adult, $8.80++/child

Fri-Sun, Eve & on PH - $18.80++/adult, $8.80++/child

The buffet includes some cooked food and dessert so with this kind of pricing, really nothing much to complain plus the steamboat items are mostly very fresh. We chose tom yum and chicken soup which I preferred the latter as the tom yum was a bit too sweet tasting for my liking.

Weekend Cooking V - Bibimbap

Bibimbap is a very well known Korean dish that practically every Koreans love! It's a kind of mixed vegetables and meat rice. Each type of vegetables are cooked separately, place together with warm rice and mix with the Korean chilli paste and sesame oil to serve. Simple and delicious!

I bought some instant bibimbap sauce from my recent Korea trip so decided to try it out at home. This is my version of bibimbap, which include pork, spinach, radish, garlic sprout, mushroom, carrot and egg. You can use any vegetables of your preference like cucumber, zucchini and bean sprout are commonly used too.

Aspiring Bakers #12 - Steamed Baby Chiffon Cake

After seeing so many entries on kueh kueh this month, I'm glad I'm in time to submit at least one entry to Aspiring Bakers #12: Traditional Kueh (October 2011). I have made these cute little greenish cakes last week but just too tide up with work and didn't have time to post it. Today, no matter how I have to squeeze some time to do up this entry on the due date.

Steamed Baby Chiffon Cake

The first time I made this kueh was during my secondary school days during Food & Nutrition class. It's a very simple and easy recipe pass down to me from my aunt. After so many years, I'm still keeping this recipe in my file. Glad to have the opportunity to do it again. This little cake is yummy, soft and fragrant.

My family likes Teochew porridge very much so when I read about Crystal Cafe from "Sparklette", I brought them to try. The cafe is located at the corner of Killiney Road in Orchard Grand Court Hotel-style Service Apt. It's a porridge buffet rather similar to the one at Quality Hotel but slightly cheaper. My aunt like their healthy cooking style, light and not oily. However they still prefer the one at Quality Hotel for the variety.

Le Chocolat Cafe

We went over to Le chocolat Cafe for cakes after dinner at Chowon Garden. Le Chocolat is a dessert cafe located in The Club Hotel. Cosy ambience and a nice place to have a cup of tea and cake.

Among all the cakes we had, the Ivory tart and green tea opera are the nicer ones.

Korean food again! No choice because the birthday girl wanted it...! It's my cousin birthday and we celebrated with her at Chowon Garden. A Korean restaurant near Maxwell House that serves rather authentic Korean cuisine. Though the food is not bad but the service sucks... my family was rather pissed off by them so I think there won't be a revisit.

Recently I discover a gem in food delivery! Chanced upon Thai To Go on a weekend when I was cracking my head on what to order for dinner... When I saw Thai To Go that delivers authentic Thai cuisine to anywhere in Singapore, I never hesitate at all and decided to order right away! The menu has an extensive range of Thai dishes at affordable price. Overall the food is average only but I think I will order it again when I'm craving for Thai food at home.

After dinner at Auntie Kim's, went to Ritz Apple Strudel which is located next door to grab some dessert home. I love their durian strudel more than apple strudel! I'm kind of weird in food... I love apple eaten fresh but not cooked in dessert.

Different types of strudel available - apple, durian, mango, peach, strawberry & blueberry. Which one do you prefer?

Tip Top versus AMK Curry Puff

I believe most Singaporeans are familiar with Tip Top in Ang Mok Kio for their yummilicious curry puff. If not for the curry puff, should have read about the headline they made few years ago for tax evasion. Recently I chanced upon AMK Curry Puff in Toa Payoh and wondering are they related to Tip Top. My buddy colleague Sharon told me the man in the picture is from Tip Top too. So is it they sell away Tip Top and start AMK Curry Puff? Anybody know?

Fisherman's Wharf is near my place but never thought of trying out untill it was recommended by Sizzling Wok 2 sometimes ago. Went on a Sunday and surprised that it was not very crowded. We didn't order any seafood just some zi char dishes...quite disappointed with the food, more misses than hits.

Pork Ribs with Crispy Cod Fish Fries - $10.00

Sizziling Wok recommendation. The pork ribs were tender but a bit too sweet for our liking though it was quite creative to add the crispy cod fish fries.

Goodbye Kaki Bukit...

My workplace has relocated to Upper Thomson area in July so in months to come, I will be blogging more on this area and bid farewell to Kaki Bukit. I had been working in Kaki Bukit area for almost 5 years. We will miss this place especially the places we frequent for lunches. In our last week in Kaki Bukit, we had lots of makan sessions to enjoy the food that we were so used too and enjoyed.

This is a very popular fishball noodles stall in my neighbour, run by an elderly couple. As the stall is forever long queue during opening hours and only open 4 days a week so I had never tried it though I stay nearby for more than 10 years. Only recently when my friends came over to have breakfast with me on a Sunday before going to church that I decided to queue for it...

Fishball Noodle - $2.50 (dry/soup)

After queuing for 20 mins, finally got my bowl of noodles! Definitely worth the wait! The handmade fish balls were bouncily soft and tasty... the noodles sauce is great too. However I prefer the version without ketchup, just chilli will be perfect.

It's my younger brother birthday and he is a seafood lover so we decided to go to Unique Seafood Market for a seafood feast. Reasonably priced live seafood with all year round promotion, 50% off on weekdays (except PH & Eve) and 40% off on weekends. Plus free cooking and preparation of live seafood by the Unique Seafood Market restaurants.

How to order? First, choose between Ah Yat (Hong Kong style cuisine) or Owen (Local style cuisine) and get a table number. Then proceed to Unique Seafood Market which is located right outside both restaurants to browse through the numerous seafood tanks to have your pick. All the seafood you have chosen will be weighed and placed into a basket tagged with table number to be sent to the restaurant. Then at the restaurant, the service crew will check with you, how you want your seafood to be cooked or prepared. We love the cooking style at Ah Yat so we always will go there plus they always give complimentary dessert.

A friday night dinner with family at Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh. This is probably one of the oldest BKT joint in Singapore located at the end of Rangoon Road near CTE exit. Read a lot of negative reviews about them after they went under Jumbo management. However I still find the BKT is of the best in Singapore and has lived up to my expectation.

The BKT version here should be Hokkien style as the soup is dark in colour where the Teochew style is light and clear soup.

Celebrated a colleague's birthday at Signature's by Lam's. A Chinese restaurant near my workplace where we will only visit on special occasion. Most of the dishes in the menu are executed well and prices are reasonable too.

Spending more than half a day at Everland, our next destination was to the Korean Traditional Centre where we were given hands-on how to make kimchi and also had an opportunity to take photos of ourselves in Korean Traditional Costume - Hanbok.

The instructor gave a short introduction of the ingredients & seasonings used in the Kimchi. Then we were given a small portion to try making. It was really a very short session.

A theme park day! Visited 2 theme parks in a day, Everland in the day and Lotteworld in the evening. Actually it was supposed to be on separate day but our tour guide rescheduled it to give us more time in shopping! We were very lucky to have a very considerate tour guide that always try to accommodate our interest.

Breakfast was quite boring at a local restaurant again near hotel. Right after breakfast we proceed to Everland located at Yongin.

Weekend Cooking III - Chuncheon Dakgalbi

As I mentioned earlier in my Korea travelogue that I fall in love with Dakgalbi. I tried cooking it at home. Google around for recipes and found one that looks quite similar to what I had in Korea. Here's my version of Chuncheon Dakgalbi!

Quite easy to prepare, just need to season the chicken and cut up the vegetables. Stir fry at the dinner table like having steamboat. This suppose to cook over a large cast iron pan but I do not have one so I used the electric hot pot. It turn out quite well, almost 70% similar to the one I had in Korea... not too bad la afterall...lol!

A farewell dinner for a colleague at Lenas @ Nex. Lenas is a family friendly restaurant under MOF that serve western food. The menu is quite interesting and extensive, from appetizer, soup, pasta, pizza, main course to dessert, under each section there are plenty of choices and combination. Even the set menu looks rather value for money too! You really have to be very decisive in ordering... lol! Everything on the menu looks appealing and it really takes sometimes to decide what to eat. We decided to go for ala carte and ordered 1 item from each section but we skipped pizza.

Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant added a new outlet at Parkroyal on Kitchener Road. With UOB credit card promotion, is worth a visit as the food and ambiance are definitely above average. We ordered a mixture of dim sum and dishes, all executed well. Will come back again for the dim sums.

Kungfu Paradise is a casual dining tea cafe under Paradise Group serving a mixture of Western and Chinese cuisine. The restaurant ambiance is pretty cosy. A nice place to chill out with friends... however the food was not so fantastic!

Very large serving portion of Chicken Chop & Fish Fillet topped with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. A tad too dry and bland tasting for our liking. I think cream sauce will be a better choice.

During special occasion like Father's Day, most restaurants will come up with value for money set menu to attract the crowds. This year Father's Day we chose to dine at Ah Yat Seafood as we saw the ads from the newspaper, the set meal they offered were really attractive and value for money! We were a group of 8 but we had the set meal for 6 pax and added on some dishes from the ala carte menu. However the portion they served were good, some of the dishes were enough for the 8 of us. Overall we had an enjoyable dinner!

Our last food stop at Joo Chiat/East Coast was to Mooshi Bakes which is under the same roof with Awfully Chocolate. Mooshi Bakes is a Japanese bakery. I was attracted by the giant Mooshi cream puff...lol! Got one to try but was not impressed by it.

The puff has soften by the time I tried. I think you have to eat right away, no wonder the cream was piped upon order! The sweetened fresh cream was too rich and creamy for my liking. I still prefer custard cream over fresh cream on puff.

Obolo - A little french bakery cafe along Joo Chiat specialises in gourmet desserts, cheesecakes, tarts and macarons. It has been almost 2 years ago since my last visit. Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to all!

Shanghai mooncake or Walnut mooncake is a great alternative to traditional and snowskin mooncake. Buttery and crumbly pastry that complimented the lotus paste with melon seeds so well and the sweetness is just right. This is much easier to make too. That's why I chose this...lol! I always love simple recipe! Last month I was so tied up with every things that I did not submit any bake to Aspiring Bakers. I'm glad I am able to make it this month.

With a few colleagues had a dinner gathering to celebrate FL, my ex-colleague birthday at Seng Kee nested along Changi Road. A zi char place that well known for herbal soup, herbal mee sua soup and steamed fish dishes. The restaurant has choice of aircon and al fresco seating. Enjoying food at the al fresco seating really give you a very old school feel. We enjoyed most of the food except for the crab which was forgettable!

Whenever we dine at Tung Lok group restaurants, is always Aunt Peggy's 'lobang'! She always has $50 dining voucher to clear off...lol! We have to spend $100 in order to off set the $50 voucher so is like 50% discount. Since she loves dim sum, I suggested to go Noble House at UIC Building along Shenton Way. It's been years since we last came here to dine.

Noble House is well known for Cantonese cuisine and serve dim sum as well. Dim sum is decent enough but definitely not the best in town. With more and more fine dining Chinese restaurants blooming up over the years, Noble house no longer stands out and is just a typical Chinese restaurant to me with no 'wow' factor.

Swensen's is a family friendly restaurant not only specialised in ice cream dessert but also serve American and local dishes. Saw a good deal at Groupon in June's promotion that valid for Toa Payoh outlet so bought a couple of vouchers. Finished off the vouchers with Aunt on one of her no cooking day.

A simple grill chicken glazed with BBQ sauce served with roasted potatoes and lotus root. Chicken was tender but the sauce was not that fantastic.

Celebrated Aunt's birthday at Triple Three, went for the International buffet, using the DBS credit card 1 for 1 promotion. We chose buffet because Aunt loves it especially for the fresh oysters.

Triple Three located in Meritus Mandarin Hotel, popular for it's buffet. The spread is not very huge but has a good combination. Some of the items like sashimi, roast beef, pan fried cod fish & tempura deserve a mention as all were very good!

Heritage Food Trail - Fried Beehoon w/Canned Stewed Pork Chops

My late maternal grandma is a Hokkien and she used to fry bee hoon with canned pork trotter. However I remembered I didn't like it very much as it tends to get quite oily. My aunt being very oil conscious has her own version of this bee hoon which has become our family and friends favourite. Instead of using canned pork trotter, she changes it to canned stewed pork chops and adds lots of cabbage. It's a simple and delightful one dish meal where I usually go for 2nd helping.

I used to fear frying bee hoon, as I tend to over fry it causing the bee hoon broken up in a mess. Now with her fool proof method, I can get the kind of al dente texture I like. Really like her method of frying the bee hoon, so simple and yet taste so good!

I think this is a Hokkien style bee hoon so I will be submitting this to Heritage Food Trail hosted by Edith of Precious Moments. Glad I'm still in time as the closing date is 31/8/11.

Day 4 itinerary was a simple one, half of the day spend on travelling. An early woke up call to meet at 7 am as we will be leaving Jeju for Seoul. Before heading to the airport to catch a morning flight, we had breakfast at one of the local restaurant. Our breakfast was the famous Jeju Abalone Porridge!

Jeju Abalone Porridge (Jeonbokjuk)

Prior before that our tourguide already warned us not to expect or see any abalone slices in the porridge as it was chopped into fine bits. The Koreans love to eat the abalone internal organs more than the flesh as it was believed that all the nutrients of the abalone are in the organs. The more abalone internal organ added into the porridge, the more nutritious it was. Our tourguide chose the authentic Korean version that was filled with lots of internal organ for us to try, that's why the porridge looks so greenish. Since he said was so good, even it was rather bland tasting, most of us still finished it off. As for me I enjoyed the side dishes more than the porridge especially the fish.

Let me take you through the travelogue of my 8 days Korea & Jeju trip. The first night was spend on board Asiana Airlines as it was a late night flight (10.40pm). One meal was served on board, around midnight. We still managed to stomach it as most of us took very light dinner.

Joined SA Tours for 8 days Korea & Jeju discovery tour in May 2011 with family. Though was my 3rd time to Korea but still love and fascinated by Korean's culture and food. Mini Tiger Banana Roll

This recipe caught my attention when I was flipping through my collection. The recipe looks simple and easy so I gave it a try. Usually tiger roll has 2 layers, the outer layer is the tiger skin and the inner roll is the normal swiss roll. But this recipe just uses the outer layer so I find it quite unique. This will be my last submission to Aspiring Bakers #9: Swiss Rolling Good Times (July 2011) hosted by Obsessedly Involved with Food.

This is a very rich tasting roll. You will get what I mean when you look at the ingredients. Personally I still prefer a lighter version of swiss roll but some of my colleagues who tried it gave rather good comment. I find it more like nonya kueh than cake...lol! If you are making macarons and have lots of egg yolks to spare may give this a try.

When I was a kid, I love chocolate rice swiss roll very much! I would be very happy when my granny bought it for our tea break. Of course now I do not crave so much for it anymore but I don't mind to have a slice once in awhile! This chocolate swiss roll uses chiffon method which is slightly more simple as compared to egg separation method but still churned out an equally soft and moist roll.

It's Sunday again, our family dine out day! Decided to explore Circuit Road Food Centre for dinner. A huge food centre rather well known for vegetarian food. You can find a handful of vegetarian stalls but we usually go for zi char (Kim Sun) in this food centre. That evening, we went for claypot rice, fried prawn noodles and fried oyster egg instead.

Last visited this economic porridge stall was more than 2 years ago but everythings are still the same. Food is still as good and the queue is still as long. Be prepared to queue to place order and sometimes the queue starts even before the stall opens especially on weekends evening. Some of their signature dishes are steamed fish, braised duck, squids and minced pork. I also like all their stir fry vegetables.

My colleague been raving about Kay Lee to me since she tasted it the first time. I finally get to try it too! Thanks to one of my colleague who drove us there for lunch. This shop has been around since the 70s and they are very famous for their authentic Zhujiang style charred roasted char siew and duck. Yes it's very nice but is quite pricey! The six of us shared half a duck, some roast pork and char siew with 2 stewed soup and total bill came up to 50 plus! However I think I will be back again as I really like the taste of everything!

Family favourite Thai restaurant! Always satisfying and affordable! Visited numerous times but each time still manage to impress me with their authenticity and consistency!

I always like Prima Taste Laksa Paste kits so when they launched it in La Mian, I knew it's definitely going to be good! This latest product by Prima Taste has been very much raved about by bloggers and was even featured on TV advertisement! I had stored a few packs in my pantry since it was launched but just didn't get to cook it till last weekend! Wanted something more savory and satisfying for breakfast so decided to whip this up. Though a bit too heavy to serve as breakfast but we enjoyed it! Anyway weekend is indulgence day... me and my excuse again...lol!

Similar to cooking instant noodles, ready in minutes! Love the noodle textures... so chewingly good, goes so well with the thick and rich laksa gravy! Slurp!

Lunch with boss at one the fine dining Chinese restaurant near workplace. Food is always good here. We enjoyed the beef very much, one of the best stew beef I ever tasted.
