Chikuwa Tei

9th Nov 2010

After all the early birthday celebrations with friends and colleagues, on the actual day is always left for my family. Celebrated my birthday with family at Chikuwa Tei and this year so glad that my dad joined us for dinner too.

Read so many rave reviews about the Chef who previously was at Wasabi Tei, now has it's own restaurant. Chikuwa Tei located at Mohd Sultan, walking distance from Liang Court. The interior is simple and neat with a few friendly service staffs. They offered quite a selection of set meal that price ranges from S$12 - S$30 plus. Overall the food is pretty average, not as good as I expect. A bit over-rated but I don't mind coming back for the Chirashi.

Sashimi (28pcs) - S$95

Fresh especially the Otoro was really good!

Lotus Root & Mushroom Stew - complimentary

I didn't like it but that was just me. The rest of them commented it was nice!

Chawanmushi

Choking with ingredients, too much till you can't really taste the smoothness of the egg custard.

BBQ Squid

A bit too dry for our liking.

Chirashi

Chikuwa Tei's famous and signature Chirashi! Finally get to try it and indeed it does live up to my expectation. Generous thick cut sashimi, definitely worth coming back for this again. However the sushi rice was not that great, too loose and not very sticky.

Grilled Hamachi

Fresh and nicely grilled!

Grilled Black Cod Fish

Not bad too, quite a thick cut.

Tempura

Pretty ordinary.

Cold Soba

The soba texture was good according to my brother and he liked it.

Cod Fish & Vegetables Claypot

This was one of the popular item too. The stock was nice, light and flavourful with 4-5 slices of cod fish and lots of vegetables.

Stir Fried Teriyaki Beef

Beef was not overcooked, still tender but too much garlic that left a bitter aftertaste.

Black Sesame & Green Tea

Nice especially the black sesame flavour. Quite pricey at S$5/scoop for such a small portion.

Complimentary Watermelon

Thank you brother for the birthday dinner treat and angbao!

My friends dropped by my place for tea and chit-chat after we were back from dinner. They bought a Mango Cheese Cake from Rive Gauche for me.

Mango Cheese Cake @ Rive Gauche Patisserie

Quite light and refreshing, more mousse liked than cheesy and the crispy biscuit base was a delight!

Happy belated birthday haha! I loved eating at the old Wasabi Tei so I quite like Chikuwa Tei as well. The chiraishi is definitely my favourite dish to order here.
