Beng Thin Hoon Kee Restaurant @ Toa Payoh

[Closed]
One of the best and also my family favourite Hokkien restaurant - Beng Thin Hoon Kee has just opened their second branch in Toa Payoh central. In the past few months, many new restaurants have ventured into Toa Payoh which bring great conveniences to us. From now till 31st Aug 2010, they are having opening promotion on the set menu and some of the ala carte dishes. 2nd visit during the month of Aug 2010 entitled to 20% discount on the ala carte menu. So within a week we visited them twice... that's just show how much we enjoyed the food.

1st visit - 7 Aug 2010

The restaurant is near Toa Payoh library and just beside Shop N Save. I was quite surprised that it was quite crowded at 6pm on a Sat evening and many tables were already taken up by reservation. Luckily one of the staff was quite helpful, willing to let us have one of the reserved table but we must finish our meal within one hour which I think should be fine as long as their serving was fast since only the two of us. We tried the opening promotion 6 course set menu for 2 at S$46++ which consist of all the signature dishes.

Beng Thin Duck Salad

If you like plum sauce, you will like this salad as it was a mixture of shredded roast duck, jelly fish, honeydew, cucumber and peanut in plum sauce dressing. A bit too much sauce and sweet for my liking.

Crabmeat Fishmaw Soup

My all times favourite soup. The broth was very flavourful and came with generous amount of fish maw. Yummy!

Crabmeat Scramble Egg w/Lettuce

This was a bit salty but it was really good. The egg was nicely cooked as it was still soft and moist thinly coated chunks of crabmeat. Perfect to serve with lettuce.

Fujian Style Prawn Ball Ngo Hiang

Not the best prawn balls. A bit too much flour and sweet tasting for our liking.

Fujian Fried Noodles

A signature dish and one of our must order dish everytime we are at a Hokkien restaurant. Portion was really big, though it was very good but we still can't finish it.

Daily Dessert: Herbal Jelly & Longan Tofu Jelly

A satisfying and value for money meal! We were given a 20% discount card for our next visit within Aug 2010 so we went back again few days later...

2nd visit - 13 Aug 2010

With Aunt, we tried the ala carte menu. We ordered a few light dishes that are on promotion as we ate too much meat the past weeks.
Fish Head Yam Soup - S$18.00++

A very delightfully rich and tasty soup infused with a nice fragrant of chinese wine. We slurped up every bit of it.

Steamed Sea Bass Fillet with Pickled Chilli - S$12.00++

Looked simple but it was full of flavour. The fillet was really fresh and sweet tasting. The pickled chilli was very tasty and complimented the fish very well.

Stir Fry Mustard Green - S$12.00++

This was a bit mild tasting and would prefer it to be softer.

Fujian Fried Fine Noodles - S$8.00++

A bit overcooked as the noodles were all broken up. This alright only not very fantastic.

Total bill was $53.45 after 20% discount if without the discount I think the price was a bit on the high side.

Last Saturday, our family went to Toa Payoh branch for birthday dinner. I would say quite disappointing.... we ordered set dinner and we felt that most dishes is too salty, not to our liking. The only satisfying dish is Yam paste with ginko & pumpkin.
