Sofra Turkish Cafe & Restaurant

20 Aug 2010

We had an enjoyable Turkish dinner at Sofra located at Shaw Tower. I been reading quite a few nice reviews about them and always waiting for opportunity to try out. Finally the day came, my cousin suggested to have our weekly family dinner there but we took awhile to convince my family as they are not so adventurous on food. That explains why we always ended up going for Chinese food instead.

The restaurant ambiance is comforting and cosy. The atmosphere has a Mediterranean feel with soft Turkish music playing in the background and an open concept kitchen with a see through window where you can see how the kebab is prepared. Turkish cuisine is very new to us, all we know about Turkish cuisine is kebab only so we asked the serving staff to recommend. The menu is quite extensive and interesting from starter, main to dessert and pricing very reasonable too. We liked most of the food we ordered that evening. Definitely will be coming back again for more...

Hummus - S$4.20

Mildly spiced cream mixture of chickpeas & tahini with lemon juice. Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern dip, serve with Turkish bread. This was a nice spread, quite appetizing and addictive.

Sesame bread - S$3.40

One type of Turkish bread and is a common staple food for the Middle Easterner.

Red Lentil Soup - S$3.80

Traditional Turkish soup with red lentil & herb. Lentil is a type of bean that is rich in protein and is commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisine for soup and rice. The soup has an earthy flavour and we liked it. It's tasty and not too rich.

Chef Plate - S$17.50

A combination plate consists of Doner kebap, Izgara koft & a skewer of Shish kebap served with Turkish bread and salsa in an onion flower.

The portion was quite big so is advisable to share if you are not a meat lover. The meats were well seasoned and we liked the chicken the most. The beef and lamb were a bit dry but eating it with the salsa was pretty ok.

Sofra Yaprak Tavuk - S$19.50

Chicken meat stuffed with veggies, rice & mushroom. Served with mashed potatoes.

A signature dish worth trying. Chicken leg meat was flavourful and tender that complimented the stuffing well. We especially liked the creamy and cheesy mashed potatoes.

Sofra Fish - S$14.90

Baked cream Dory fish in foil, served with bread/rice. One of their signature dish and an alternative main course if you wanted something lighter instead of meat. This fish took awhile to prepare as we were informed by the staff. Well it's worth waiting for as we really enjoyed the fish very much. The tomatoes based sauce was really appetizing and so good that we slurped up every bit of it.

Pide - S$10.50

Turkish pizza - few varieties to choose from. Beef, lamb, chicken, cheese & tomatoes & zucchini. This was just ok but I like the bread chewy texture.

We were really full and satisfied so gave dessert a miss. Anyway we will still go without it as Turkish desserts are generally too sweet for our liking.
