Bee Heong Palace Restaurant

4 Apr 2010

It's been a while since we last had Hokkien food. Checking back on my previous post, the last time was way back in Oct 08, celebrated my brother's birthday at Beng Thin Hoon Kee, one of the 3 popular Hokkien restaurants in that area. This round we decided to settle our Hokkien fare craving at Bee Heong as it's been years since we last visited.

It's a Sunday evening but was surprisingly very quiet. Though only 2 tables were taken up at 6 plus but the serving time was slow like having a 8 course Chinese dinner where we were only served the next dish when we completely finished the existing one until we asked them to expedite. The restaurant decor and ambiance is rather old fashioned and typical. We ordered the usual stuff we always have for Hokkien food. The 3 must have for us will be the fish maw soup, Braised pork and Hokkien mee. Bee Heong's version of these 3 dishes are average only.

Duck Salad

A chinese salad which was quite refreshing but the one at Beng Thin Hoon Kee (BTHK) was nicer as this one didn't come with any dressing so was a bit bland. A combination of shredded roasted duck, honeydew, jelly fish and crispy crumbs.

Deep Fried Prawn Roll

The filling is a bit too floury for our liking.

Fish Maw Soup with Vegetables

Thick flavourful broth with chunky ingredients like shredded fish maw, mushroom, bamboo shoot, carrot and black fungus. Though is flavourful but preferred it to be richer in taste. This is a healthier version of fish maw soup compared to the one I had at BTHK which was loaded with crabmeat.

Oyster Omelette

This was nicely done up. The oyster was fresh and sweet, the egg was soft and moist.

Mustard Green in Dried Scallop Sauce

This was a very light and refreshing vegetables dish which all of us liked it.

Tung Ann Braised Meat

A signature dish which was nicely executed but personally I don't like the taste of vinegar in it though it's help to take away the oiliness of this dish. The pork knuckle was braised till so soft and succulent that almost melt in the mouth. Paired well with the steamed buns.

Braised Hokkien Noodles

My family's all times favourite. The noodles was tasty & flavourful. But a pity there's burn taste in the sauce which caused a slight bitter after-taste.

Overall, the food and service is average. Pricing is reasonable and I think slightly cheaper than BTHK. According to my aunt, the standard has dropped.

Have you tried Beng Hiang? It's my family's favorite Hokkien restaurant. Their fish maw soup, kong ba pau, hae zor, oyster omelette & hokkien mee are all very good. A must-try. (:
