New Lucky Claypot Rice

I have not been blogging on my eats for so long! I shall start with New Lucky Claypot Rice which I just had last weekend! My family had crowned them as their favourite claypot rice and think is the best in Singapore even though we waited for more than 1 hour for our order! Definitely worth the wait! Actually they accept advance phone order. Next time we will do that instead of wasting time waiting there. Thanks Perlyn, my friend for the recommendation!

The claypot rice was cooked traditionally by charcoal. There are around 20 charcoal stoves in the stall! The moment we stepped into the hawker centre, there were very nice claypot fragrant in the air and was very crowded too. All waiting for their claypot rice!

Tong Chiang Claypot Rice

26th Dec 2010

We discovered a nice place for claypot rice. A corner coffee shop at the junction of Serangoon Road and Lavender Street. They specialised in claypot rice and Hakka cuisine. Pricing was rather reasonable and portion was generous too. We had a large claypot for the 5 of us and some side dishes. The claypot rice was nice, cooked to the right texture with good smokey flavour. However the side dishes were not that impressive just ordinary but the claypot rice definitely worth a return.

Chicken Claypot Rice with Sausage & Salted Fish - S$22 (L) (S$6/S$11/S$16.50)

The large size claypot was meant for 4 persons but was more than enough to serve 5-6 persons.

Steamed Fishhead with Spicy Bean Sauce - S$13.00

The sauce was too sweet for our liking.

Pig's Intestine with Pineapple - S$8.00

This is a Hakka dish. You either like it or hate it. Definitely not my cup of tea.

Mai-Cai with Taro-curd - S$10.00

We love mai-cai and the sauce was tasty.

Mixed Pork Soup - S$5.00

They also sell bak kut teh and the mixed pork soup was peppery good too.

Claypot Fun Is Still Fun!

12th Mar 2010

A revisit to Claypot Fun that I rave about on my first visit last year. Glad that the food standard still maintain and we enjoyed tremendously every single pot we ordered. That's why I said "Claypot Fun is still fun!" lol! These are my kind of comfort food, so homely and warming to the soul.

There are at least 7 types of claypot rice to choose from and each regular pot is enough to serve 2. We had 3 different types of rice, 2 side dishes and 2 vegetables. Total bill for 5 was less than S$70.

Claypot rice with chicken and mushroom

Claypot rice with black bean sauce pork ribs
Claypot rice with salted fish and minced pork
We love the grainy rice texture that filled with "wok hei"... oh no should be "pot hei" lol!
Claypot pork liver

The sauce was so so tasty infused with lots of chinese cooking wine. A must order dish for pork liver lover.
Claypot sesame ginger chicken

Very generous with shredded ginger. Almost like a confinement dish. Love the ginger but don't dare to take too much as it's rather heaty.

Claypot chinese spinach in soup
Very light and refreshing, complimented the heavy flavoured claypot rice very well.
Claypot iceberg lettuce in fermented bean sauce

The lettuce serving portion seem to shrink not as big as the first time.

Yummy Claypot

I was back to Joo Chiat again for dinner on the same day where I had lunch at Ubin Seafood. As I heard my boss mentioned that there was something quite nice at Yummy Claypot but she never mentioned what was it... So since I'm meeting my uncle's for dinner so I suggested to go there. However, we were not very satisfied with our dinner, after all was not so yummy... maybe we should just order their signature black chicken wrapped in pig stomach soup (S$30) instead which was being raved about.

Claypot Minced Meat Salted Fish Rice - S$5.50

It's heaven & earth as compared to Claypot Fun. The minced meat seasoning was not nice and the oil used was not fresh so giving us an unpleasant after taste.

Claypot Chicken Rice - S$5.50

This was much better than the minced meat claypot at least with some claypot fragrant.

Dried Tea Mushroom Soup - S$4.80
&
Huai Shan w/Black Chicken Soup - S$6.00

Both soup were a tad too oily & had a sour aftertaste which all of us disliked.

Sambal Sotong w/Chicken Gizzard - S$12.00

We were wondering real hard why they named this dish sambal. There was no sambal at all and tasted horrible using curry powder or maybe also some chiili powder to fry it. Very China style of cooking...

Dual Style Baby Kailan - S$8.00

This was so far the most normal & acceptable dish for us but still I think it's a bit too oily.

Pork Belly Fried Beehoon - S$6.00

After the above not very satisfying dishes, we added an order of beehoon which the texture turned out to be good but lack of garlic fragrant & a bit too salty. Seem like nothing can interest us in this resturant...

Fresh Veg Juice - S$2.50

However, this was rather refreshing after all the above oiliness. Their home made vegetables juice using cai xin, apples etcs.
As we were leaving the restaurant, this pressure cooking pots caught my attention. Really high tech right... not even using gas, all electrical.

Claypot Fun

Claypot Fun was featured on Sunday Times 2 weeks ago by Wong Ah Yoke. He had given a rather high rating for this newly opened joint serving cantonese style claypot rice and dishes. With family, thinking of what to eat last friday (10/07/09) and landed at this restaurant.

The minutes we entered the very retro decorated restaurant, the fragrant of claypot "wok hei" was so good that just make you more hungry. It was crowded and we waited almost 45 mins for our order. The waiter had informed us prior before we ordered that it will be a long wait as there were too many orders. And, they cooked their rice from scratch so it will take min 15mins wait if it is not crowded.

Cantonese or rather Hong Kong style claypot rice was different from the typical claypot rice that we are used too. It doesn't serve with black sauce but just some light sauce specially formulated by their chef. However, you will be surprised that it's just taste as good without black sauce. The rice testure was good and so fragrant. I believe a good stock was used to cook the rice in order to obtain such taste.

Claypot rice w/salted fish and minced pork - S$10.80
A must try, so far is the best claypot rice that I had eaten. You don't even need to add any sauce to it. Though it looked plain but it was not plain in taste when eaten with the well season salted fish minced pork. Yummy....
Claypot rice with chicken and mushroom - S$10.80
This was not bad too but not as rich in taste as the salted fish minced pork rice. Just add some light sauce in and it was perfect. The chicken was tendered and nicely seasoned. If you don't like salted fish, this will be another choice for you.
There are a total of 7 types of claypot rice to choose from, other than the above 2. There are Claypot rice with preserved chinese sausages / live frog / minced beef & egg / pork ribs and claypot rice with just fragrant pork oil. The prices are reasonably good ranging from S$5.00 to $16.80. One claypot can serve up to 2 - 3 paxes.
Claypot Pork Liver - S$9.00
There are 7 types of claypot specialities and we tried 2 of them. The pork liver was nicely cooked with ginger and spring onion in a very yummy sauce. More rice please....
Lettuce with red fermented beancurd - S$6.00
Nice and sizzling hot when served.
Watercress with pork ribs soup - S$5.20
You can ordered some double boiled soup to go with your meal too. 4 choices on the menu but that day all were sold out except for watercress. Actually wanted pickled mustard w/duck soup.
Additional S$2.00 for soup

Another interesting find from reading the review on Sunday Times which was not stated on the menu. You can actually request to add soup to your claypot after you finished the rice with additional charge of $2.00. A good idea to finish up all the rice in the pot by letting it soaked for awhile, it will become rice porridge. If you like the burnt smell of the rice, you will like this.
A very satisfying and unforgetable meal that don't cost much. Total bill - S$51.55 for 4. Value for money and quality food. Believe me, this was one of the best meal I had in months.

Bao Fa Traditional Food - Claypot Chicken Rice

Claypot rice, a traditional cantonese food where rice, chicken, chinese sausages & salted fish are cooked in a claypot over charcoal stove. Mix with thick dark soya sauce & lard oil when serving. However for health issue, a lot of stalls had omit the lard and the one we went tonite at Bukit Batok also didn't put lard.

It's has a few serving size. We ordered the one that serve 5 at $18.00. I think it's quite cheap as the portion was a lot and each of us can have at least 2 bowls of rice. The chicken was a lot but too little salted fish. I find that it's lack the traditional taste but my family enjoyed it.
