Chicken Hotpot @ Nex

Chicken Hotpot is one of the restaurant that I visited quite frequently with my colleagues in Nex. Not that the food is very fantastic but the four of us simply love crowding around the small table gossiping and eating the piping hotpot with chicken, beef, prawn or fish.

Sing Ning Ji

22 Feb 2011

A new find in my neighbourhood. A cafe serving homestyle Dongbei & Sichuan cuisine at very reasonable pricing. The menu is pretty interesting and extensive too, from cold dishes, handmade noodles/lamien/dimsums, dumplings to stir fry dishes etcs. I tried their Beef Knife Shave noodles a week ago and find it quite nice. So I recommended to Sharon and went back to try their other dishes with her.

Steamed Buns - $$3.80

Very rustic steamed bun. Definitely can't compare this to those from restaurant. The skin was quite thick and the filling was not very soupy too but the taste was fine. Anyway it was really cheap.

Chuan Garden Restaurant

5th Dec 2010

60 Dishes Authentic Szechuan Cuisine A la Carte Buffet with Drinks @ Only $18nett instead of $36 at Chuan Garden!!! So tempting & such a good deal right! Yes I was attracted by this advertisement at FB by BigDeal.sg and bought 4 vouchers right away online. We went with high expectation but was disappointed with the food, simply didn't suit our palate or perhaps too authentic. Though there are 60 dishes to choose from but limited cooking style and only one type of dessert offered on the menu. Almost all the dishes are cooked the same way with lots of chilli oil, szechuan peppercorn & dried chillies! Practically almost all the dishes we ordered were soaking with chilli oil. What displeased us the most were they won't serve you in small portions, all came in standard size. We only manage to try 13 out of the 60 dishes. Out of the 13 dishes, most of it we couldn't finish, just too 'jerlard', spicy and oily! Really an unpleasant dining experience of Szechuan cuisine.

Szechuan Chilli Crab & Fish

The crab was not bad but the fish was not fresh and very fishy.

Duck Gizard & Fried Chicken

The duck gizzard seasoning tasted quite weird so we didn't like it. The fried chicken with dried chilli was quite nice, very peppery and fragrant.

Big Intestines & Chicken in Curry flavour

The intestine was cooked like the fried chicken above so pretty nice but the other chicken dish we didn't like it.

Eggplant & French bean

Eggplant was nice but too much oil and french bean was too salty.

Slice fish in Chilli Oil & Tomatoes Egg Soup

I had this dish in Shanghai before and I liked it very much but the version here was lousy, just chilli oil with tasteless dory fillet. Tomatoes egg soup was a delight after trying the spicy and oily stuff. I think we enjoyed this the most.

Dan Dan Noodles & Dumplings

Oh mine! Look at the noodles also came in a bowl of oil but the noodle texture was nice, very good bouncy bite. The dumpling skin was too thick for our liking.

Pumpkin Balls

The only sweet item on the buffet menu. Simple but nice.

Chicken Hotpot - Revisited

22nd Apr 2010

The last time was one year ago. This small eatery at Square 2 is still packed during meal times. Menu is simple, only 3 types of hot pot to choose from. Used to be only chicken and beef, now there is prawn. It's my kind of comfort food, sizzling flavoursome hotpot served with rice. We ordered the large prawn and chicken hotpot to share which was just nice for 4.

Prawn Hot Pot

Quite unique and nice. The base was generous serving of celery in rich tom yum stock, followed by crispy french fries and top with fried prawn. The prawn was deep fried till crisp which I can literally eat the whole prawn with the skin and head.

This was very appetizing and yummy. The fries were surprisingly delicious.

Chicken Hotpot

Chicken, green pepper, chilli and onion stewed in special spices and seasoning. I always like chicken especially those cooked in hotpot. The sauce was very flavourful that go well with rice.

It's another type of flavour when additional stock was added where you can add additional item. We chose to add bittergoud and my all time favourite instant noodle.

Indeed a satisfying dinner. However, they can't accomodate large group of diners, max 4-5 paxes only. And also, used to be no service charge but now 10% service charge is applicable.

Chicken Hotpot @ Square 2

Passed by Chicken Hotpot @ Square 2 a few times since it was opened months ago. I think there are other outlets too, one of them at Shenton way. The fragrant coming from the steaming hotpot smell so delicious and I always wanted to try. Went there for dinner last Tuesday. It was really good and I will definitely go back again.

It was situated at the snack bar corner beside NTUC at Sq 2. This eatery originated from China and their menu is pretty simple, they served 2 types of hotpot - chicken and beef in small, medium and large size. Prices ranging from $12 plus to $20 plus (No GST & service charge).

Chicken Hotpot (L - S$20.80)

We ordered a large chicken hotpot and a small beef hotpot to share for 5 of us. The chicken was marinated with more than 10 types of spices and stir fry with onion, leek, green pepper, red chilli, carrot, celery, ginger and sizchuan peppercorn. It was full of flavor and the sauce was so delicious. Shiok! They have spicy and non spicy version. Bird chilli was added for spicy version. They will add stock when the sauce began to dry up. It was still as good even with stock added in.

Beef Behemoth (S - S$12.80)

Plate: Yellow - S$1.00 / White - S$2.00 / Black - S$3.00
For me, I prefer the beef but the chicken was nice too. The beef was so tender and almost have the melt in the mouth texture. So yummy! We can order side dishes like veg, mushroom, meat, seafood, noodles etcs to cook in the hotpot when stock was added and eat it like a steamboat.
