Tung Lok Signatures

A Sunday brunch with family to satisfy our dim sum craving at Tung Lok Signatures! Average tasting dim sum. Service and pricing are alright! I like the ambience as the restaurant is bright and cheery. Great for weekends family gathering.

Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant (Parkroyal on Kitchener Road)

26 Jun 2011

Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant added a new outlet at Parkroyal on Kitchener Road. With UOB credit card promotion, is worth a visit as the food and ambiance are definitely above average. We ordered a mixture of dim sum and dishes, all executed well. Will come back again for the dim sums.

Noble House

12th Jun 2011

Whenever we dine at Tung Lok group restaurants, is always Aunt Peggy's 'lobang'! She always has $50 dining voucher to clear off...lol! We have to spend $100 in order to off set the $50 voucher so is like 50% discount. Since she loves dim sum, I suggested to go Noble House at UIC Building along Shenton Way. It's been years since we last came here to dine.

Noble House is well known for Cantonese cuisine and serve dim sum as well. Dim sum is decent enough but definitely not the best in town. With more and more fine dining Chinese restaurants blooming up over the years, Noble house no longer stands out and is just a typical Chinese restaurant to me with no 'wow' factor.

Swatow Seafood Restaurant

4th April 2011

Swatow Restaurant located in Toa Payoh Central specialised in Teochew cuisine and serve dim sum as early as 8am in the morning daily. Dim sums are served in traditional push cart style, there are a total of 63 items on the menu from steamed items, fried items, rice rolls, congee & dessert to choose from. Sometimes I preferred to order from menu instead as you don't have to wait till the cart comes to you which at times really took a while. We were there on a weekend morning around 10 am and the restaurant was already quite packed. However dim sum quality was not as good as expected. Of all the items we ordered, only the porridge and egg tarts were nice.

Prawn Dumpling - S$4.00++

The dumplings were oversteamed, skin was broken when picked up and prawns were not nice too.

The Paramount Restaurant

8 Jan 2011

Aunt Peggy had a few $50 dining vouchers from Tung Lok group expiring in end Jan 11 so we been dining at The Paramount Restaurant pretty often in January even our reunion dinner Pengcai was ordered from there. The Paramount Restaurant is probably one of the older establisment under Tung Lok Group. Specialised in Cantonese cuisine and popular for it's dim sum buffet and ala carte buffet dinner. As the voucher could not be used on buffet so we went for ala carte dim sum. The dim sum served here is average tasting and pricing is very reasonable too. Though it's either fantastic nor no good, but still was able to satisfy.

Usually for dim sum, we tend to order the same stuff...lol! You will get what I mean if you browse through my previous post on dim sums. We had quite a few items that Saturday and total bill came up to $120 for 5 people. After the $50 voucher, was only $70... very worth!

Taste Paradise @ ION

9th Oct 2010

As promised we were not going to have dim sum for awhile since the last indulgence at Wah Lok months ago in Apr. After so long, we are craving for it again... lol! Aunt Peggy suggested to try Taste Paradise. Reservation was made a week ago and when it's near we received 3 calls from them for confirmation. A bit 'kiaso' right, so worry that the table was wasted if we don't turn up where they will only hold for 15mins. Seem to be very popular and they only allowed one and half hour sitting for each table on weekends. We were there on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant were already full house at 11am. Went with high expectation but was not very impressed, more misses than hits.

Overall dim sums quality was average only but pricing was pretty reasonable considering the posh ambiance. We spend about S$30 per person. Service was not up to mark, still need improvements. Why I say that? We were pretty surprised to see a housefly actively flying around our table so we informed the staff. But instead of giving us an apology for the discomfort, he started explaining it was quite normal and it's not their fault but Ion building management fault. Claiming there were lots of that in Ion recently and they had lodged their complaints already. Quite weird right as if we were making such a big fuss over a housefly...lol! Anyway enough of my rantings, let's see what we had ordered...

Crackling Pork Belly - S$12.80++

The pork cubes were smaller than the usual serving size in other restaurants. Anyway this was good, not too fatty, well seasoned and the skin was cracklingly crispy.

Fried Beancurd Roll - S$4.80++

Quite different from the usual flat one as this was filled generously with prawns and the beancurb skin was very light and thin. However I still prefer the traditional one, more skin and more crispy.

Crispy Silver Bait in Special Sauce - S$8.80++

This was nicely done and quite appetizing, the sweet and sour dressing complimented the crispy bait well.

Crispy Fried Eggplant with Floss - S$9.80++

This was not really nice, the floss was too dry and not flossy at all.

Xiao Long Bao - S$3.80++

Pretty ordinary and the skin was a bit too thick.

Scallop Dumpling - S$4.80++

This was not nice, the dumpling skin was thick and starchy. The egg white was bland and can't really taste any sweetness from the scallop. For a moment I was wondering what I was eating.

Har Gao - S$4.80++

Har gao is a benchmark for dim sum restaurants and this one disappoint us very much. Over steamed and not properly shaped, some bigger and some smaller. The moment we picked up with our chopstick, the skin broke away.

Steamed Chicken Feet - S$3.80++

A must order for us, this one was not well steamed as the tendon was a bit hard and didn't have the melt in the mouth texture.

XO Carrot Cake - S$7.80++

One of the signature dishes and was well executed. Carrot cake was soft and flavourful.

Cheong Fun with Scallop - S$5.50++

Not bad, love the chewy texture.

Steamed Glutinous Rice - S$3.80++

This was ordinary too.

Garoupa Fillet Congee - S$6.00++

The porridge was a delight. We had the fish and the century egg porridge, both were nice. Very smooth and tasty.

Egg Tarts - S$3.60++

Not bad, the flaky pastry was buttery and the custard was smooth.

Steamed Custard Bun - S$4.20++

This was not the best one around though the custard was runny but a bit too sweet for my liking. Seem to have more custard than salted yolk as the custard was not sandy.

Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant

11th Apr 2010

We love dim sum pretty much and the choice for our dim sum indulgence this month was at Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant, located at Level 2 Carlton Hotel. An award wining Cantonese cuisine restaurant that serve traditional dim sum during lunch daily. This was a first visit for all of us and we really looking forward to this Sunday dim sum lunch since there were numerous rave reviews about them and also highly recommended by my buddy to try. So I made a reservation one week in advance for my family as I heard weekends are usually very packed. I was right, it was almost full house at 11.30am when it's just started for lunch. The restaurant ambiance is great, it's elegant, classic and spacious. We were given a nice big table in the main hall near the window.

The dim sum selections are the standard traditional fare nothing really fancy but each one was executed nicely. Nothing really no good and some of them are exceptionally nice that warrant a return visit from me. Generally I felt that the fried and baked items are done better than the steamed ones. Let's see what we had that day... be warned it's a long post!

Crispy Roast Pork - S$10.00++

Nice crackling skin but would prefer the pork to be leaner, a bit too fatty.

Marinated Spiced Pig's Shank with Jelly Fish - S$13.80++

Aunt Peggy liked the pig shank which I never try and we liked the jelly fish.

Deep Fried Silver Fish - S$13.00++

Very addictive! Very well fried as it was not oily at all. A must try!

Deep Fried Octopus Tentacies - S$12.00++

Another addictively delicious appetizer.

Steamed Prawn Dumplings - S$6.80++ (3pcs)

A must have for all our dim sum session and usually this will be the benchmark for the dim sum fare. As for Wah Lok's one was traditionally well executed but not the best one around.

Steamed Pork Dumplings - S$5.60++ (3pcs)

Another standard must have item. This was not bad too.

Steamed Scallop "Cheong Fun" - S$6.50++

The rice roll was smooth but too thick and floury for my liking and this was probably the only item fell below average.

Steamed Carrot Cake - S$4.50++

One of the signature dish but I find that the sauce was a bit too salty for me.

Steamed Glutinous Rice Wrapped with Lotus Leave - S$5.40++

A must have for my cousin.

Steamed Fish Head with Chilli - S$5.80++

Fish head is my all time favourite and this was fresh and delightful.

Baked BBQ Pork Bun - S$8.00++ (4pcs)

One of the being rave about item and I totally agreed that it was good. The thin bun skin hold the tasty moist char siew well and the baked pastry on top further enhanced the overall bun making it a signature dish. A must try!

Baked Egg Tarts - S$7.00 (5pcs)

One of the must try too! This was so good! The pastry was so light and flaky with the melt in the mouth egg custard. Can easily polished off one effortlessly and wouldn't mind to have a second helping.

Deep Fried Yam Rolls - S$5.70++

The lacy batter that coated the mushy yam was so light and delicate. A plus for being not so oily.

Deep Fried Prawn Dumplings with Salad - S$10.50 (5pcs)

Deep fried stuff are always easy to bit on and this was rather average, nothing to shout about.

Century Egg Congee - S$3.00++

Seafood Congee - S$6.00++

The texture of the porridge were thick and nice but preferred the century egg porridge which was more flavourful and rich. Also, they should at least add in some garnishing like spring onion instead of serving it plain.

Fried Vermicelli - S$18.00++

This was well fried with wok hei but a bit oily.

Deep Fried Mango Ice Cream - S$6.00++

Not as good as expected probably because I don't like dessicated coconut. The mango ice cream was not very flavourful too and was frozen hard. We had a hard time scrapping it.

Cream of Pomelo & Mango - S$6.00++

Very refreshing without being too creamy or sweet. I liked it. A nice dessert to end the heavy dim sum lunch and cleansed our palates.

Pickles at S$3.00++ and tea at S$1.00++ each. Wow, I think we over ordered for 5 of us as we were really very full, indeed a very satisfying dining experience except that one of the waitress was not very polite. Her face looked like the whole world owing to her. Still overall is a great place for good, hearty, traditional Hong Kong dim sum.

The total bill was about S$190 plus. Approximately about S$40 per pax which was quite reasonable for the quality and quantity. By the way, this was a treat from my uncle. Thanks Uncle! We all decided to take a break from dim sum in the next 2 months after this over indulgence...lol!
