Quan Ji Seafood 泉记海鲜

Just discover a hidden gem in my neighbourhood! This stall was recommended by the media few years ago but I only noticed it after my friend told me about it recently. The food is reasonably affordable and good!

Hui Wei Chinese - Thai Cuisine

Chinese food with a touch of Thai is what I feel of Hui Wei Chinese - Thai Cuisine located in one of the coffee shop at French Road. You can get some of the Thai dishes here but the cooking style was milder in term of seasoning and spiciness and that really cater more to our local taste bud. Reasonably priced and offered a variety of nice Chinese-Thai dishes.

Signature Fish Head - Very unique! The sauce is so appetising! The fish head was fresh and cooked just right!

Fisherman's Wharf

[Closed] Fisherman's Wharf is near my place but never thought of trying out untill it was recommended by Sizzling Wok 2 sometimes ago. Went on a Sunday and surprised that it was not very crowded. We didn't order any seafood just some zi char dishes...quite disappointed with the food, more misses than hits.

Pork Ribs with Crispy Cod Fish Fries - $10.00

Sizziling Wok recommendation. The pork ribs were tender but a bit too sweet for our liking though it was quite creative to add the crispy cod fish fries.

Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup

8th June 2011

With a few colleagues had a dinner gathering to celebrate FL, my ex-colleague birthday at Seng Kee nested along Changi Road. A zi char place that well known for herbal soup, herbal mee sua soup and steamed fish dishes. The restaurant has choice of aircon and al fresco seating. Enjoying food at the al fresco seating really give you a very old school feel. We enjoyed most of the food except for the crab which was forgettable!

Herbal Mee Sua Soup (L) - $6.00

Signature Mee Sua soup. A mixture of slice pork, kidney & liver in a flavourful herbal broth! Yum!

Yi Jia South Village Seafood Restaurant - Revisit

6 Mar 2011

Sunday dinner at a popular Zi Char near home. My family like their Fishhead steamboat but that evening the steamboat wasn't as good as before. The soup lacked of flavour and richness but the other dishes we ordered were quite nice.

Emperor Chicken

This was good! Rich, herby & winey...

Xing Long Guang Shi Xiao Shi

23 Jan 2011

Have any of you eaten at Food Centre zi char stall? The food can be real value for money compared to those from the coffee shop. I knew a few good one around and recently I discovered another nice one located at Ang Mo Kio Ave 1. We actually intended to have Teochew porridge but the stall only opens at 6.45 pm! We didn't want to waste our time waiting as it was only 6pm when we were there so we decided to try this zi char stall which is located in the same Food Centre.

Claypot fishhead

Frog leg with ginger and spring onion

Pork ribs stew

Stir fry ngai bai

We enjoyed all the dishes except for the pork ribs. Total bill for 5 people was about $40 plus, quite reasonable right!

Yi Jia South Village Seafood Restuarant - A revisit

19th Dec 2010

Revisited Yi Jia South Village Seafood. One of the better zi char near my home. We always go for the fishhead steamboat which are one of their popular dishes.

They were always very generous with the vegetables and the soup was flavourful too.

We had a whole red grouper fish steamboat that evening. Very fresh and sweet tasting and cost about S$40.

My uncle craving for crabs so we ordered the chilli crabs at S$30 per kg only. Surprisingly cheaper than most of the zi char stall. However we find the sauce too sweet for our liking. Should have try their salted egg crabs instead which is the signature dish. Well the next time then...

Kim Sun @ Circuit Road Food Centre

4th Dec 2010

Zi Char stall in Food Centre can be really nice and value for money as compared to those from coffee shop due to lower rental cost. Kim Sun located at Circuit Road Food Centre is one of my family's favourite hawker stall zi char. Their cooking is always filled with so much "wok hei"! The stall is now operated by the son, 2nd generation. They are around since the 1970s. We have not dined there for quite sometimes as the food centre was closed for renovation and was only opened recently. We really missed their food and glad that the standard still remain. Here's some of our favourite dishes and total bill was about S$60 only for the 5 of us. Cheap and good!

Claypot Ginger & Sesame Oil Chicken

Deep Fried Seabass with Sauce

Pai Gu Wang (Pork Ribs)

Bittergourd with Sliced Fish

Beansprout with Salted Fish

Pig Stomach Soup

Lai Huat Seafood Restaurant

28th Oct 2010

Celebrated my brother's birthday at Lai Huat. A coffee shop zi char restaurant famous for it's Belachan Fish, a very local style zi char. This eatery was highly recommended to me by my colleague where her family frequent regularly. Usually very packed on weekends but pretty alright on weekdays. We ordered a number of dishes and all turn out quite nice. Pricing is very reasonable too and I would say quite cheap. We had 9 dishes and total bill for 7 was about S$180 averagely was about S$25/pax. Definitely value for money.

Sambal Belachan Sole Fish - S$24.00

A signature dish. We never seen such a large sole fish before, very fleshy and fried till very crispy with sambal belachan topping. The sambal taste like shrimp sambal, very good with rice.

Black Pepper Crayfish - S$36.00

Fragrantly fried with black pepper but I find it a bit dry.

Claypot Braised Sea Cucumber & Duck Web - S$15.00

The pot was full of goodness, with crunchy duck web, sea cucumber, sea clam, mushroom and vegetables. Braised sauce was very flavourful too.

Chilli Crab - S$60.00

This was impressive too. We instructed them not to add tomato sauce and it turn out real good. We love it spiciness.

Crispy Baby Squid - S$10.00

This was executed perfectly. Crispy and appetising but the crispiness didn't last so must eat it fast.

Oyster Egg - S$6.00

Simple egg and oyster. Fried till very fluffy though a bit oily.

Sweet & Sour Pork - S$8.00

Quite nice, the pork was sliced thinly and very lean, fried till crisp. Sweet and sour sauce was well balanced too.

Baby Kai Lan - S$10.00

Nicely fried with wok hei.

Stir Fry Mee Sua - S$6.00

Very generous with the ingredients.

Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant

3rd Oct 2010

There are many Hong Kong Street Family Restaurants in Singapore and I really not sure which one is the original one or are they all related. I visited the one at Balestier before and they served almost the same type of dishes. Their signature dishes are the same too, like San Lor Hor Fun, Prawn Paste Chicken and Assam Fishhead. Anyway the one at Novena Garden seem to be very popular and always very crowded. I went to try with my family on one of our Sunday dinner. Overall the food and pricing are decent.

San Lor Hor Fun

I always like this type of hor fun and this one was pretty nice. The fish was very fresh and the hor fun was smooth with nice wok hei.

Prawn Paste Chicken

Deep fried to perfection, crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside.

Assam Fish Head

Love the sauce, it was so appetising.

Bittergourd & Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce

This was not very nice, flavour was very shallow and not well braised.

Vegetables with Braised Abalone Mushroom

Nice vegetables dish but would prefer it to be less oily.

Sembawang White Bee Hoon

28th Aug 2010

After our farms tour, we returned to the resort to check out. Our 2 days 1 night countryside discovery tour ended with a simple zi char lunch at Sembawang White Bee Hoon. My friends were the first time trying it but was a revisit for me. The food is still as good as I can remember.

White Bee Hoon - $7.00

Not as flavourful and rich tasting as the first time but still nice.

Prawn Rolls - $10.00

Surprisingly delightful and I think is better than some of the famous Hokkien restaurants.

Stir Fry Mussel - $8.00

Good wok hei and the sauce was good too.

Kai Lan with Mushroom - $6.00

Love the rich oyster sauce flavour in the vegetable, just the way I will like to stir fry my vegetables.

Joo Hing Restaurant

29 Jul 2010

Another birthday lunch treat for a colleague at Joo Hing located along the famous food street of Joo Chiat. This is a family run restaurant that serve authentic Cantonese style zi char dishes. Is one of the popular zi char place in the east and has been around for many years. My family used to dine there quite often on weekends in the past but I notice the food just don't taste as good as it used to be. We ordered quite a few dishes and total bill came up to about $110.00 for the 6 of us. Overall still a satisfying lunch with more hits than misses and most importantly the birthday girl liked their food. Happy Birthday Sandra!

Steamed Song Fish Head

This is quite fitting to be a signature dish as it was perfectly well done. The flavourful bean paste and the crispy lard complimented the fish very well.

Steamed Squids with Special Sauce

I always love to order this as it was steamed to perfection. The squid was juicy and sweet tasting.

Prawn Paste Chicken

Our all time favourite zi char dish.

Steamed Minced Pork with Salted Fish

This was a bit too oily for our liking. And there's lots of fat and starch in the pork.

Braised Tofu with Prawns

One of their signature dish too but was not very well executed as the sauce lacked flavours and too starchy for our liking. The tofu was cold inside and the prawn had fishy smell.

Bittergourd with Pork Ribs
This was pretty nice. Full of wok hei...

Omelette with Silver Fish

Look rather plain and homecooked but was surprisingly nice.

Sambal Tapioca Leaves

Not bad though the sambal was a bit sweet.
