Whampoa Drive Block 90 Market & Food Centre

Whampoa Drive Food Centre is quite a popular hawker centre in Singapore. When you mentioned about best Rojak in Singapore, one of Singaporean favourite local delicacies! Other than the one at Toa Payoh Hub, we will channel our thoughts to Whampoa Drive Food Centre. Yes the famous Balestier Road Hoover Rojak is located in this food centre. Of course other than rojak we can find many local delights here too. We tried a few stalls when we visited on one of the Sunday family dinner outing.

Hong Lim Food Centre

Hong Lim Food Centre is a 2 storey hawker centre located at Upper Cross Street near Chinatown. You can find lots of good food in this place. With family visited this food heaven for lunch on one of my non working Saturday. We tried out 3 of the most popular and highly recommended noodles stalls. Let's check it out ...

Sembawang Hill Food Centre

Another gem I discovered near my new work place is Sembawang Hill Food Centre. This food centre is rather small in size as compared to the usual one so there are not many choices but there are 4 stalls that make me and my colleagues go back again and again. 4 of our favourites are the Salted duck rice, Fish ball noodles, Satay beehoon and Kway chap.

628 Ang Mo Kio Food Centre

As I mentioned earlier, my workplace has relocated to Upper Thomson area in July 2011. This give me an opportunity to explore the food scenes in this part of Singapore during lunch break. 628 AMK market is one of the food centre we frequent.  Let's take a look at some of the popular stalls here where there's always a queue during lunch hour.

Goodbye Kaki Bukit...

My workplace has relocated to Upper Thomson area in July so in months to come, I will be blogging more on this area and bid farewell to Kaki Bukit. I had been working in Kaki Bukit area for almost 5 years. We will miss this place especially the places we frequent for lunches. In our last week in Kaki Bukit, we had lots of makan sessions to enjoy the food that we were so used too and enjoyed.

Chao Zhou Fishball Noodles

This is a very popular fishball noodles stall in my neighbour, run by an elderly couple. As the stall is forever long queue during opening hours and only open 4 days a week so I had never tried it though I stay nearby for more than 10 years. Only recently when my friends came over to have breakfast with me on a Sunday before going to church that I decided to queue for it...

Fishball Noodle - $2.50 (dry/soup)

After queuing for 20 mins, finally got my bowl of noodles! Definitely worth the wait! The handmade fish balls were bouncily soft and tasty... the noodles sauce is great too. However I prefer the version without ketchup, just chilli will be perfect.

79/79A Circuit Road Food Centre

15 May 2011

It's Sunday again, our family dine out day! Decided to explore Circuit Road Food Centre for dinner. A huge food centre rather well known for vegetarian food. You can find a handful of vegetarian stalls but we usually go for zi char (Kim Sun) in this food centre. That evening, we went for claypot rice, fried prawn noodles and fried oyster egg instead.

Claypot Chicken Rice - $6/$10/$15

We ordered the $15 pot and was good enough to serve 4-5 people.

My favourite stalls @ Maxwell Food Centre

9 Jan 2011

Maxwell Food Centre is one of the very famous hawker centre in Singapore. I used to have lunch at Maxwell FC almost every weekdays years ago where my workplace was just opposite. I really miss those days, I will never have to think of what to have for lunch as the food there are mostly very nice. Recently I went there with my family for lunch on weekend. Glad that most of my favourite stalls are opened on Sunday. Here's what we had...so satisfying and yummy!

Zhen Zhen Porridge
Stall 54 @ Maxwell Food Centre

Fish Belly Porridge - Super fine congee texture with generous serving of fish. We queued the longest for this, almost 30 mins but was worth it.

Raw fish salad - another popular items and must order to go with the congee.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice
Stall 10 @ Maxwell Food Centre

The famous chicken rice where it even attract tourists to find their way to Maxwell FC to savour their Chicken rice. Yes they are that popular!

Succulent and tender poached chicken with the delicious dressing that pair so well with the fragrant and flavourful rice.

Beansprout with cuttlefish - we enjoyed this too, the bean sprouts were plump and juicy!

Rickshaw Noodles
Stall 87 @ Maxwell Food Centre

I used to buy breakfast from them almost twice a week. I simply like the way the old uncle fried the bee hoon, there's wok hei in it. Very old school feel...

Rickshaw mee sau/noodles are special too... I don't see stalls selling these except here. A lot regulars will have a bowl of this with beehoon. It's a comfort food or taste like granny's food. A must try!

Fried items to compliment the Rickshaw noodles where you pick what you want and the old couples will fried it on the spot. All are very nice especially the fried prawns are very popular, sold out real fast.

Jin Hua Fish Head Noodles
Stall 77 @ Maxwell Food Centre

Tried so many fishhead noodles from other hawker cenres, still this is the best! The fish was nicely seasoned and fried, the stock is so rich and tasty!

75 Peanut Soup
Stall 57 @ Maxwell Food Centre

I'm not an asian dessert person but I particularly enjoy this red bean brown rice dessert with tangyuan. It was so well done and not overlysweet. Another comfort food of mine! A must try but they are not opened on Sunday.

Best of Blk 630 Bedok Reservoir Food Centre

One of my favourite hawker centre for lunch with few of my colleagues. Not within walking distance from workplace so usually we will share a cab to go there whenever we crave for nice hawker food! Usually we will go there twice a month. Lots of nice food in this hawker centre. Here's a list of our favourites.

Blk 630 Bedok Reservoir Road
Bedok Reservoir Road Food Centre S470630
Cheng Fa Fried Kway Tiao #01-11

This stall was newly opened. The char kway tiao and beehoon got standard! Not the very sweet type which I liked and full of wok hei. A must try!

Long Fa Yong Tau Foo #01-16

The homemade ngoh xiang and fish cake are really good but quite expensive. The soup was flavourful with ikan bilis and soya bean infused in it. What I like is they will refry all the fried items and serve separately. Everything are nice and fresh, just a bit pricey. You can easily spend $4-$6 for a meal.

Yuan Li Shu Shi #01-25

This noodle is one of my favourite. The mee was superspicy and they are very generous with the ingredients. Shiok!

Xing Li Shou Shi #01-10

Sometimes we will order a carrot cake to share as a side. Slightly above average as compared to some of the hawker stalls.

Soon Huat Cooked Food #01-03

We love the fishball soup of this stall so we will order one to share at times.

Check out some of these stalls that I had blogged before which are also our favourites.

Da Chang #01-01 : Fish Soup, Braised Pig Trotter, Fried Fish Head

Xiang Ji Chicken Rice #01-26 : Hainanese Chicken Rice (Very good char siew)

Guang Liang Cooked Food #01-35 : Kway Chap (sold out early)

Xiu Ji Ikan Bilis Yong Tau Fu

There is another stall worth trying and not to be missed if you are at Chinatown Complex Food Centre. We took awhile to locate this Yong Tau Fu stall as it's at a corner. Usually you will see a long queue but don't have to worry as it cleared off pretty fast. They occupied 2 stalls, one for serving and the other one for preparation. All the YTF are handmade and steamed tray by tray using bamboo basket tray. Very simple and yet delicious! Definitely a healthy choice for hawker food.

A very different kind of Yong Tau Fu. They don't serve it with sweet sauce and sambal chilli but serve kind of chicken rice style chilli sauce. We don't get to choose the items, it's all fixed. A standard $3 bowl comes with noodles and 7 pieces of Yong Tau Fu with a mixture of beancurd skin & Tofu with fish paste, fishballs and Tau Pok. Fishcakes seem to be very popular too but it was sold out that day so I didn't get to try it.

I enjoyed all the items and the soup very much. Very light to the palate yet flavourful without much MSG.

There are few types of noodles to choose from, kway tiao, mi tai bak, yellow noodles and bee hoon. Served with onion oil and fried ikan bilis. I liked ikan bilis very much so add $0.50 for extra topping. Too bad that the ikan bilis are not very crispy.

Tian Tian Porridge

Porridge with raw fish, one of my favourite hawker food and comfort food! Tian Tian Porridge located at Chinatown Complex Food Centre and they are listed in Singapore CEO's Hawkers Guide. They served Cantonese style porridge and raw fish. Porridge texture is nice, smooth and not too thick. What I like most is the minced pork ball, the texture is very good like handchopped meat. The raw fish is very fresh too and went so well with the porridge. Very simple flavour yet so delicious!

House of dessert @ Circuit Road Food Centre

There's a dessert stall located directly opposite Kim Sun Zi Char so naturally we will have some after dinner. Nothing fantastic but was nice to clear the palate after a heavy zi char meal.

Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

13th Nov 2010

Another very popular stall in Toa Payoh Blk 127 Food Centre is Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee. Has earned many good reviews over the years and has always been our favourite too. They are just 1 stall away from 88 Congee. The last time I ate this was years ago and was wondering was it still as good. So we ordered one to share along with the porridge. Well it did not disappoint, rich tasting and so flavourful but portion seem to have shrink.
