Auntie Kim's Korean Restaurant - Ala Carte Buffet!

A pigging out session with buddies colleagues on one of the Saturday after work at Auntie Kim's Korean Restaurant which is located very near to our workplace. One of them bought the deal's promotion for the ala Carte buffet so we went to try it out! The buffet's menu is the same from the normal menu but certain items are limited to one order only.

The 4 of us nearly tried out all the stuff on the menu lol! That's why I said earlier this was really a pigging out session! Started off with some side dishes, bibimbap, spicy rice cake and stir fry glass noodles. 

Chowon Garden Korean Restaurant

Korean food again! No choice because the birthday girl wanted it...! It's my cousin birthday and we celebrated with her at Chowon Garden. A  Korean restaurant near Maxwell House that serves rather authentic Korean cuisine. Though the food is not bad but the service sucks... my family was rather pissed off by them so I think there won't be a revisit.

Auntie Kim's Korean Restaurant

Craving for Korean food and settled our craving at Auntie Kim's located at Upper Thomson Road. The menu was quite limited and prices are slightly on the high side. Overall the food was average only.

A new Korean BBQ restaurant at City Square. Highly influenced by me, now my family love Korean food too. Whenever I mentioned there's newly opened Korean restaurant, they are usually very keen to try. So we went to check out this new joint on our regular Sunday dinner outing.  

The restaurant served Ala Carte Buffet too but we decided to just order from the menu. Most young diners will opt for the buffet.  I find it quite value for money if you are meat lover! Overall the food was just average and not very impressive but to compare with Seoul Garden and Crystal Jade Korean BBQ, this is a better choice for Korean BBQ buffet as the food is more authentic.

Crystal Jade Korean BBQ Buffet

A CNY dinner gathering with ex and current colleagues at Nex. After reading review at Soshiok.com, we decided to try Crystal Jade Korean BBQ buffet. The concept is rather similar to Seoul Garden serving BBQ cum hotpot buffet that include cooked dishes, snacks, desserts, ice-cream and drinks. Not the real authentic kind of Korean BBQ, rather localised version of Korean BBQ. Prices are attractive and affordable but the buffet quality was not satisfying and rather disappointing though it's look like a good spread.

The restaurant has 2 sections, one is the usual Crystal Jade restaurant and the other caters for the buffet. The buffet section does not cater to big group dining as the biggest table only meant for 4 - 5 persons so if you are going in group then you have to sit in separate table. Overall we enjoyed ourselves though not on the food but on the company...lol!

The cooked dishes can do without as most of the items are not appealing and they don't seem to top up fresh cooked food. The hotpot and BBQ items are not too bad but not impressive too. There are 2 types of soup to choose - pork ribs and kimchi soup. The pork ribs soup is nicer as the kimchi soup tasted liked sichuan veg soup instead.

Some of the raw items we tried, the prawns look pathetic though... all the meat, fish and squid are quite fresh. We ate lots of mid wings and instant noodles, that the nicest among the rest...!



The cooked stuff as I mentioned earlier, can do without but we still attempt to try some since it's a buffet! However we did enjoy the char siew pau...lol!



We didn't try the dessert except for the ice cream. I definitely don't see myself going back again as there are better BBQ hotpot buffets elsewhere.

We had Korean food for Sunday family dinner and also to celebrate cousin Bf, RS's birthday. I suggested to try Your Woul located at Goldhill Centre serving authentic Korean cuisine. This restaurant was recommended by my colleague and had received pretty good reviews at HGW.

After trying we find it rather average and didn't win us over. My conclusion was definitely not the best one around in terms of authenticity, food wise and value. The prices are generally more expensive than the other 2 of our favourite Korean restaurants - Doong Ji and Kim Family Restaurant. The ambiance is quite ordinary like typical family restaurant but service was not very friendly.

The 6 complimentary side dishes were not very outstanding and they were not very keen in refilling the banchan for us.


Hae Mul Pa Jeon (Korean Pancake with Squid) - S$12.00++

Quite nicely done. The egg was crispy on the outside and the inside was soft and fluffy.


Go-dung-eo Gu (BBQ Mackerel Fish) - S$13.80++

I find it very expensive for such a small slice of fish. The portion and taste wise are similar to what was served in Food court Korean stall.


Pan Fried Chicken with Vegetables & Rice Cake - S$39.00++

This was nice but quite costly as the portion was not very big.


Samgye Tang (Chicken Broth with Ginseng) - S$23.80++

The soup was too light and bland for our liking. Still prefer the one at Doong Ji which was really rich and flavourful, they even top up the soup for us. At Your Woul, they don't even when we requested.


Dolsot Bibimbap Set - S$11.80++

The rice was too soggy for our liking and again portion was quite small.


Citron Tea - S$5.00++

Sweet and soothing. My aunt like it.

Su Korean Cuisine

My family has gradually began to appreciate Korean cuisine after dining at a few rather outstanding Korean restaurants. I'm so glad because we don't have to limit our Sunday dinner to Chinese food only. At least now they are more adventurous, they will buy my suggestions. Recently I brought them to Su Korean Cuisine located at Far East Plaza for Korean BBQ. They have 2 other branches located at Boat Quay and Jurong. I got to know them through credit card promotion voucher I received from CIMB - 1 for 1 BBQ set. Did a quick check at HGW and was quite recommended so we decided to give it a try. With the voucher discount, it's a value for money dinner and total bill for 4 was about S$105. Quality and freshness are pretty good and service is very impressive too.

Banchan (8 complimentary side dishes)

Quite standard banchan was served mainly vegetables. More outstanding were the ikan bilis and garlic sprout.


BBQ Meat & Seafood Set - S$50.00++

With the 1 for 1 voucher, we had 2 sets of this which consist of chicken, pork collar meat, pork belly, beef ribs, squids, scallop, prawns, fish and assorted fresh mushroom. Per portion was quite big enough to serve 2-3 paxes.

The meat & seafood were very well seasoned and fresh. Lettuce salad basket was complimentary and no charges if you required extra serving. They will cook in the kitchen for you if you do not wish to BBQ at the table but we chose to do it ourselves.


Spicy Kimchi Soup - S$14.00++

Very spicy and thickly flavoured with Kimchi. Too overpowering that we are not used to it. My aunt actually prefer my version of kimchi soup. However portion was big, enough to serve 4.


Grilled Mackerel - S$16.00++

Quite standard fare. Nicely grilled and the fish was fresh.


Soursop Juice - S$6.50++ (Free flow)

Unbelievable that the fresh juices are refillable! This is really worth ordering and so refreshing after all the BBQ.


The restaurant also offer a variety of set meals which cater to big group dining. I took a glance and looks quite interesting. The set meal looks sumptuous and not very expensive too. Definitely will visit them again.

Finger Licking Good Fried Chicken @ BBQ Chicken

Revisited BBQ chicken @ Toa Payoh sometimes ago on a Friday evening for dinner. Tried the fried chicken and find it such a delight. This has become my favourite fried chicken place. They also served healthier chickens as only olive oil is used in the cooking.

Olive Luxury Chicken (2 pcs)

2 luscious pieces of fried chicken marinated for 24 hours with 30 natural seasonings and deep fried to golden perfection using olive oil. It's really finger licking good! So crispy on the outside and the inside was so moist and juicy. Tasty & yummy! Beats KFC or Popeye anytime.


Jerk (Jamaican Jerk Spice) BBQ (1 pc)

One of their signature chicken and still taste as good as the last time I tried.


Chicken Aglio Olio

Sliced mushroom, red chilli, chicken slices & garlic in olive oil with spaghetti. Very generous with shitake mushroom and chicken but it's a bit too bland and dry for my liking.

Seoul Yummy

A popular casual dining restaurant that serve reasonsably priced Korean cuisine. We went to the one at Square 2. We were not very hungry so just order a set dinner to share. The set dinner came with 4 side dishes, a starter and main course. I was surprised that the portion was quite big which was enough to serve 2.

4 side dishes

Anchovy, Potato salad, Spicy cold tofu and Kimchi. We liked the tofu and anchovy, very appetizing but the kimchi was not very nice.


Fried chicken with salad cream

3 chunky pieces of boneless chicken leg meat coated with batter and deep fried till crisp. This was decent but not impressive and the seasoning was quite light tasting.


Kimchi pork soup with rice

Very generous serving of kimchi, pork & golden mushroom. The soup was not very rich but still tasty. However I prefer a richer version of kimchi soup.

The food are not so authentic and generally quite mild tasting that I think has changed to cater to our local palate. Ambience and service were not too bad.

Doong Ji Korean Restaurant - Revisit

Lunch at Doong Ji with few of my colleagues to celebrate Marilyn's Bday. As usual I'm always the one making recommendation. They wanted to try somethings different so I suggested to have Korean food since some of them never try before at all. Doong Ji is one of the nearest to our workplace. They serve quite nice and authentic homestyle Korean cuisine. I been there once quite sometimes ago and enjoyed my meal. This recent visit also did not disappoint.

Banchan

6 side dishes were served and all were pretty nice. We requested a few refills of the anchovy.


Ginseng Chicken

The soup was very rich and flavourful. Soup can be refilled upon request.


Spicy Pork

This was not as good as it used to be as it's lack of smokey fragrant.


Seafood Pancake

The pancake was nice too. More like omelette with seafood as there are more eggs than flour.


Spicy Tofu Soup

A delightful and comforting spicy soup.


Rice cake & Ramen Combo

Always see these in Korean drama but never get to try it till now. It's nice, the spicy sauce went pretty well with the rice cake and ramen. Quite addictive.


Bibimbap

One of their signature dish. A must try.


Kimchi Fried Rice

Too much kimchi and the rice was a tad too soggy for my liking. I preferred my own version of Kimchi fried rice.

Hansang Korean Family Restaurant

I was alone at Sq 2 looking for a quiet place for a nice warm meal and landed myself in this Korea restaurant which was not crowded at all on a weekday night. Once seated I was served with some appetizer which didn't whet my appetite at all. A nice long plate with bits of seasoned black bean, a small cube of tofu and some seasoned dried shrimp. Followed by 6 side dishes which looked boring too and I only enjoyed the caramised eggplant that went well with the rice.

Marinated Beef Set - S$16.00++


Steamed rice in hot pot

The best part of the set is the rice, it was really nice and soul warming. Steamed with a red date, a slice of pumpkin, carrot and sweet potato.

The beef was quite disappointing in term of taste and portion, there was more onion and spring onion than beef. I think some of the Korean food stall in food court served a better one.

BBQ Chicken

There are a few chain restaurants recently opening up branches in Toa Payoh Central. BBQ Chicken - Korea's No 1 Chicken Restaurant is one of them. The restaurant offers quite a large selection of mains, there are Grilled specialty, Olive specialty, Breads, Pastas and Beef & Fish to choose from. Daily set lunch is avaliable which include soup, choice of a main, drink and ice cream. I was there with Sharon for lunch on a Saturday afternoon after work. We ordered the set lunch which I think it's quite value for money and a starter to share.

Jamaican Jerk Spice BBQ - S$14.60

Chicken whole leg was marinated for 24 hours, then grilled it over hardwood charcoal fire and glazed it with Korean style BBQ sauce. The chicken was very tender and I like the smokey seasoning too. My choice of side was mashed potato and coleslaw.

Cream Chicken and Mushroom Pasta - S$11.90

This was Sharon's choice. I tried some and find it too creamy and it's quite difficult to finish all.

Chilli Wings - S$6.90

Crispy fried chicken wing served with hot sweet chilli sauce and a raddish kimchi. The wings tasted like prawn paste chicken. Nothing special but the kimchi was yummy and appetising.

6 choices of side dishes to choose from other than coleslaw and mashed potatoes, there are also french fries, olive rice, tropical salad and seasonal vegetables.
